Have you ever wondered how helping your children convey feelings and emotions in their unique form can be achieved? The chances are that if you have experienced your children have meltdowns or tantrums that it has crossed your mind.

Every child has particular characteristics that can make us wonder how we can best connect to them. Children are individual human beings who hold unique characteristics, especially when it comes to expressing their feelings and emotions.

I have 3 children, each with different characteristics and ways of expressing emotions and feelings. I often scratch my head when I am trying to understand or connect to them when they are behaving in peculiar ways that convey their feelings and emotions in their unique form, read more about them here.

In this blog, I would like to highlight them here to give you an idea of how you can help your children convey their feelings and emotions in their completely unique form.

Understanding and Connecting to the feelings and emotions of our Tweens/Teens

First, my tween daughter processes her feelings and emotions through meditation and journaling. When our children are approaching their teen years, they tend to stop communicating as freely to their parents as they once did.

They find themselves going through changes and sometimes feel embarrassed to talk about them. If you have a child who is well-written, they will likely take loads of comfort from keeping a journal. Read more about her favourite journal here.

If they care about their physical, mental, and emotional health, they could take comfort from meditation, pilates, or yoga. This yoga and mindfulness card game is a fun way to incorporate the mental and physical benefits of both activities, see here.

The key is to help them find that one thing that will help them express their feelings and emotions freely. Think about their strong characteristics and find an activity that resonates with them, and will provide them with a platform to springboard their thoughts.

Communicating and Connecting to our Primary school kids

My son is 9 years old and expresses his feelings and emotions through movement and mindfulness colouring books. These are amazing outlets for kids that are more visual and can increase their focus and concentration. See his favourite mindfulness colouring book here.

Kids that experience anxiety can also benefit from getting their emotions and feelings out on paper with journals. Journalling can also share the uplifting benefits of expressing gratitude and help our children to convey their feelings and emotions in their unique form in a non-confronting way such as this journal, see here.

Motor development skills are also crucial at this age. It’s important to introduce them to activities that will assist in developing crucial skills. Age-appropriate activities can encourage them to express their feelings and emotions. If your child displays an interest in arts and crafts, give them activities such as mindfulness colouring books, drawing, and painting.

If they prefer to work with visuals, introduce them to vision card games like these emotions cards, or interactive and educational TV. Babies to pre-school kids can respond well and learn from pictures in. Again, it’s important to find what resonates with your child’s individual characteristics for them to be able to express their feelings and emotions freely.

Accepting and embracing the feelings and emotions of our babies

Oh, the wonderful baby years! Babies are usually uninhibited in their expressions ranging from vocal to physical behaviours. These precious years go by fast, yet they can set their habits for getting attention and behaviours in accepting or reacting to situations.

Children often learn about emotions and feelings from the people they are around for the first few years. Simple activities like baby yoga can engage with them physically and emotionally to enhance their overall wellbeing. Read about it here.

My vocal and bubbly baby girl is able to fully express her feelings and emotions uninhibited at any time! Even at such a pure and innocent age, babies have individual characteristics that need to be expressed in their unique form.

They are exploring sight, sound, smell, and touch and therefore need to express their feelings about each sense they discover. It’s us as parents who have the tricky job of translating and understanding them when our children convey feelings and emotions in their unique form.
